So today I want to talk more about fashion and why I ADORE J-Fashion/ decora fashion and more!
I know, another fashion article lol but I am really inspired about this at the moment and it seems to be one of my most asked questions. So let’s get into it!
Let’s start with a brief outlook on what J- Fashion and Decora fashion means and how I tie them together.
J-Fashion and decora fashion is a take on early Japanese street fashion from the streets of Harajuku, Japan. It is the buzzing centre of Japan’s fashion culture and has become diverse in so many ways. Street fashion is a personal style adapted by people in many ways; this can be things like their favourite sports team, pop idol and even their favourite country. There are many styles and types of fashion that has been raised throughout Shibuya, Harajuku spawning all the way back to the early 1980’s that started with a Yokohoma Trad style focussing more on the elegant side of fashion.
Of course there are many other styles which can be referenced in this handy article I located on google. This will give you an overview of Tokyo/Japan fashion leading from the 1980s through to more recently. See the article here: https://artsandculture.google.com/exhibit/ogKCPmGdPtB7Iw
Decora: It is defined as a Japanese fashion style of the late 20th century characterized by bold, bright colours and numerous accessories.
The decora fashion began in the late 90s and is now famous both inside and outside of Japan. Artists in Japan such as Kyary Pamyu Pamyu have also become staples for donning the Harajuku style therefore reaching a more worldwide market. Decora fashion lends itself to a more youthful look where you can play around with fluffy and cute accessories while tying it into your own personal style.
So as you can see both Decora and the Joshikosei Kawaii that I don complement each other beautifully. Adding my Joshikosei eccentric style to decora makes it more unique. So imagine a bright pink outfit but with possibly spikes or skulls included and possibly a more indie style brand included to separate it from the normal “decora” style.
I love playing with both styles at the same time because it makes sure people still get hints of my own personality and cross overs. Sometimes I will go for a darker look with bright accessories and bright look with dark accessories. Other times I will try and hold to a more decora look depending on the mood of the day and any event I may have to attend.
Take this look for example:
As you can see, the reason I love this culture is it allows me to play with my youthful looks and accompany it with a cute style. Of course this fashion doesn’t work for everyone so my only words of advice to finding your style is below
