So cosplay to me.. It was a learning curve. It all started when i went to my first cosplay related event and i saw all these amazing people dressed as their favourite characters. I was legitimately in awe of them because to me it was perfection. Seeing their happy faces and giggling with their friends also dressed up in theme. To me i never knew it as cosplay, i just saw it as people doing their thing the way they want. Some even did original character versions of a character.. That means to take a character they like and create another outfit for them.. Kind of like a fan made version.
This to me was the ultimate compliment. That they could relate to the character in some way shape or form and that transforming into that character made them so happy and it almost appeared as though it made them invincible! My journey didn’t start out THAT epic though. Mine started out with becoming a cat girl. Sound simple to most but really it was part of how i became the kitten i am today, just like any experience you have to learn what and who you are.
This was one of my first photos where i felt comfortable as my inner kitten. She took a long time to learn and well, I AM JUST DARN CUTE OK! Haha. Being a catgirl is something i really thoroughly enjoy and it makes me feel more complete. It probably seems a bit silly but we all have that one thing that makes us different from the others. This is mine. And now i am part of an elite group at Neko Palace where we all get along and have created somewhat of a mini family.
Fast forward a few years and I then delved into cosplay. I was working at conventions and they were mainly Supanova and Oz Comic Con in Perth, Australia. This is when i was learning all about cosplay and able to talk to others about how they started and what some tips were to get going. The main tip everyone gave to me was to make sure that the character resonates with you somehow. That that character is someone you look up to or even just is aesthetically pleasing to you.
Some more advice i was given was that it doesn’t matter if you buy, make or even trade your costumes as long as you are having fun and that you allow the same courtesy to others. I cannot remember my first ever cosplay as it was so long ago but i am pretty sure it was a full lolita costume to edge me into it. I had lots of photos taken on the day but have never been able to find any of them :( But I was so honored that day to feel special and amazing even if it was for a short time.
This was when i decided cosplay was for me. To be around others with like minds and be able to talk about gaming, anime, movies and MORE! It extended far beyond a hobby to me. It is now selective and i only cosplay characters i really adore or admire for one reason or another. My 3 fave characters to cosplay are Hatsune Miku , Panty (from panty and stocking with garterbelt anime) and Kotori from love live! (pics below of miku and Panty!)
The best part of cosplay to me is not only sharing it with others but also including those closest to me. Above you can see the image with Miss Nightfeathers and both images by Winston Smith. These two have been 2 of the main supports for me with my discovery and we share stories and moments that are unforgettable. My partner and I also do cosplays together and it is the cutest freaking thing EVER!
Having people close to you and sharing the same interests is key. You can lean on each other when it all goes south but celebrate just as much together! When you collaborate and get your outfits you can squeel and send stupid selfies to show how happy you are. It really is the greatest feeling knowing that cosplay is not only becoming so well known but it is also now another way we can all come together and share in the happy moments wether it be at a convention or even at home because you feel like dressing up for no reason!
So if you ever feel like doing something just do it! You never know it might take you to a magical place and help you identify that part of you that needs to shine! Wether it be cosplay, listening to music, hanging with friends or taking a day off just to be in the world and sit in a park watching life, JUST DO IT!
