Music is something that shapes the lives of many people. For me personally, songs generally attach themselves to memories or feelings I've had during certain times in my life. So I thought I would compile a continually growing list of some of my favorite songs in a playlist as well as naming a couple here along with some reasoning for why it's one of my current favorites as well as my favorite line(s) from the song.
#1 Sinister - Frankie Cosmos
I came across Frankie Cosmos quite randomly one day when I was just going through Youtube listening to different artists. Her songs are generally on the shorter side and can be seen as quite simple but there's just something about her voice and songwriting I quite enjoy.
"Sometimes I just feel sinister."
#2 Ghosts Outside of My Hands - Nona
If you've ever seen the movie Electrick Children this will be a song you are familiar with. It instantly became one of my favorite songs, the tone, the just general sadness in the song mixed with the beautiful sound of the singer's voice. Very melancholic and a song I feel really paints an image for the listener.
"I got so scared when I met you, then felt nothing. You felt it too"
#3 Mama - My Chemical Romance
MCR was the first band I ever remember liking, as well as Gerard Way being my first crush at the age of 4 or 5. I grew up on Three Cheers but when I got older I went back and started listening to everything else they had come out with at the time. Mama was just super theatrical and creepy and I loved it from the start.
"Mama, we're all full of lies. Mama, we're meant for the flies. And right now, they're building a coffin your size. Mama, we're all full of lies."
#4 Rocket Man-Ninja Sex Party cover (originally by Elton John)
I love the original by Elton John but when Under the Covers II came out and I heard Danny singing this I became really infatuated with it. Considering they're a comedy band every time they break away to do covers it's always so beautiful to see.
"I'm not the man they think I am at home. Oh no,no,no I'm a rocket man"
#5 If I Believe You - The 1975
Other than just being a beautiful sounding song, it's something that I can relate to quite a bit. The primary focus being that of being in a dark place and wondering if you were religious or if you just believed in something if it would make all of the pain go away. Quite an interesting one and I was really fortunate to have gotten to see them perform it live.
"If I'm lost then how can I find myself?"
#6 Hour - Porches
So the lead singer of Porches was dating Greta aka Frankie Cosmos and they both sing in this and I said on my meet the pet interview when I listed this as one of my favorite songs. I very soon after that found out they broke up. So long story short this song is beautiful but makes me sad now.
"Oh how I float, just wondering about her."
#7 Gatekeeper - Jessie Reyez
I very recently discovered Jessie so there's not much of a history or anything with this one. A really intense song about how she was treated when trying to make it in the music industry. Pretty intense, I believe she has a documentary behind the song.
"20 million dollars in a car. Girl, tie your hair up if you wanna be a star."
#8 Blackbird - The Beatles
One of my most favorite songs of all time. It's just really beautiful, not much more I can say about it.
"Take these broken wings and learn to fly. All your life. You were only waiting for this moment to arise."
#9 You Take My Breath Away - Queen
One of my top bands, Queen will always have a very special place in my heart. Freddie's voice in this is amazing and literally is breathtaking.
"I'll get no sleep till I find you to tell you. That you just take my breath away."
#10 Trouble - Halsey
Halsey's EP is legitimately one of my favorite things from her. I love everything she has come out with since but the rawness in a song like Trouble definitely sticks with me.
"Go on and light a cigarette, set a fire in my head. Set a fire in my head, tonight"
Okay so these are only 10 of current 35 songs I have put together into a little playlist on my Spotify. My Spoofy (brownie points to anyone that gets that reference) username is 'spookysalem' and the playlist is called 'favorites.' Let me know if you check it out! -Salem
